Littoral 2010

The 10th Littoral Conference

Littoral 2010 – an international conference for researchers and practitioners
"Adapting to global change at the coast: Leadership, Innovation, and Investment"

Organised by CoastNet, Eurocoast and EUCC and to be held at the Royal Geographical Society, London.

21st to 23rd September 2010

Across the world coasts are dynamic and ever-changing. In recent years an improved understanding of natural processes has generated new concepts in the management of coastal landforms, water bodies and ecosystems. But we must not overlook social and economic changes, which are just as important in providing the context for sustainable management. Indeed ‘global change’ is as much about the globalisation of the economy and society as it is about global environmental change.

EXTENDED DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION: 29th of January 2010

Aims and themes - Littoral 2010

San Francisco BayThe aim of the  conference is to develop a holistic view of the priorities for integrated management across the social, political, economic and environmental divides that uniquely characterise the coast.

The themes of the conference reflect the three aspects of global change:

THEME 1: Global change and managing environmental risk;

THEME 2: Developing the marine and coastal economy, and

THEME 3Tackling inequality in coastal communities.

Each theme  will be examined from the perspectives of leadership, innovation and investment. This framework provides the basis for an analysis of coastal regions and their management and a means of addressing critical questions concerning:

  • Which are the barriers to improved management of coasts and nearshore marine systems?
  • Where are the knowledge gaps and how can we improve management?
  • What are the priorities?
  • Do lessons learned identify good practices that can be widely applied, and what are the respective roles and responsibilities of the many different actors?
  • What are the gains to be achieved through the integrated, holistic approach promoted by the concept of integrated coastal zone management?

These are important questions. Our coasts are important assets that have suffered from poor management in the past. Not only do we still struggle  to make more integrated policy, but we also have to work within a legacy of past mistakes . Such is the pace of change in the world today that we need new perspectives, new tools and new policies now. The consequences of failure are increased risk, increased cultural and economic loss, and continued loss of biodiversity.

Littoral 2010 - Call for Papers

Authors are encouraged to submit papers describing previously unpublished, original research results, not currently under review by another conference or journal, or case studies of good practice.

For Littoral 2010 CoastNet are introducing a new category of paper to be included in the proceedings, either as a paper or poster. This is the category of GOOD PRACTICE. The purpose of this category is to acknowledge the valuable contribution to coastal management of policy-makers and managers who deal mainly with implementation rather than with academic research. A main aim throughout the Littoral series has been to bring science and practice together, and we hope that this new approach will further enhance this feature of Littoral 2010.
All the papers will be reviewed by the Littoral International Committee and accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings. Both abstracts and full papers must be submitted electronically according to the guidelines below. The accepted papers will be presented during regular or poster sessions as indicated by the committee.

It is important that authors carefully consider the relevance of their work to the conference themes, as these will form the principle assessment criteria.

Submissions that do not fit with these priorities will not be accepted.

Key dates

Abstract submission due: Extended deadline: 29th January 2010
Abstract acceptance notification due: 28th February 2010

Instructions for the compilation of papers

Prospective authors should submit an extended abstract, containing sufficient detail to enable the Littoral 2010 International Committee to assess the quality and relevance of papers to the conference themes.
An extended abstract is not simply a long abstract. An extended abstract should contain key references, comparisons to related work, proofs of key theorems, and other details found in an extended paper. Writing a good extended abstract can be more demanding than writing a research paper.

For ORIGINAL RESEARCH papers, the extended abstract should clearly specify the problem(s) that the research is addressing, the expected contributions(s) of the work, a brief description of the methodology adopted, results obtained, and the conclusions resulting from the work. Some things that can be omitted from an extended abstract include future work, details of proofs or implementations that should seem plausible to reviewers, and ramifications not relevant to the key ideas of the abstract.
For GOOD PRACTICE papers, the extended abstract should clearly specify the policy or management problem(s) that the initiative has addressed, the expected contributions(s) of the work to wider practice, a brief description of the approach adopted, results obtained, and the conclusions resulting from the work.

The extended abstract should fit on one page of A4. It must include Name(s) of author(s), name of institution(s), title of paper, and text of abstract according to the formatting guidelines below. The abstract should be clearly marked as GOOD PRACTICE or ORIGINAL RESEARCH as appropriate.

Conference structure - Littoral 2010

Theme 1. Global change and managing environmental risk. As world development progresses human interventions have increasing impacts on climate, on water, on living resources, and on ecosystem processes. This trend poses many risks for society and for our economies. At the coast, in particular, integrated policy and management responses are necessary to avoid the unintended consequences of poor decision-making.

Theme 2. Developing the marine and coastal economy. Coastal and maritime policies for the EU and elsewhere aim to focus attention on the contribution of the coast and seas to furthering growth and jobs within the context of sustainable development. Increasingly, the need is for integrated planning across the land/sea divide to ensure that policies for different forms of economic development, environmental protection, for infrastructure, and for community development are ‘joined up’.

Source: NOAA

Theme 3. Tackling inequality in coastal communities. Coastal communities should benefit from coastal and maritime policy, although there is a balance to be achieved between local and national benefit. The integration of local social needs into coastal management policy is hampered by poorly understood relationships and policy solutions are in their infancy.

Audience - Littoral 2010

Who is Littoral 2010 for? It has been a feature of the Littoral series of conferences (now in its 20th year) to bridge the gap between science and policy, between research and management. Littoral 2010 will be no exception. In fact we plan to make this the most integrated event yet!

For researchers:

A well organised and strongly themed programme with time for debate and a focus on reaching a new level of understanding. A wide selection of papers and posters, and the opportunity to develop papers further for inclusion in prestigious journals.

For policy-makers and managers:
There will be a special ‘good practice’ element to the conference, comprising posters, workshops, and networking events that bring together researchers, policy-makers and managers.

For project partnerships:
Collaborative projects, especially those funded through Europe’s RTD and territorial cooperation programmes are the birth-places of innovation and nurseries of new policy and practice. Participation in Littoral 2010 will provide the opportunity to disseminate good practice, to meet with partners, and to form new working relationships.

This event will be organised by CoastNet, a not-for-profit network that brings together thousands of coastal and marine professionals, institutions and community members from the UK and worldwide who care about the diverse aspects of coastal living and management.

CoastNet is spearheaded by its independent Board of Directors, comprised of leading professionals in all sectors of coastal management (Research, policy and practice). The CoastNet team brings together the expertise and skills to address our projects in a holistic way, approaching the issues from social, cultural and environmental viewpoints.

CoastNet works in four strategic areas: Policy, Communities, Governance and Knowledge management. Recently CoastNet’s activities have expanded to include policy advice and local community projects.

CoastNet was established in the UK in 1996 as a charity to raise awareness about coastal issues. Its main activities were conferences and publications for coastal practitioners. In 1997 the Eurocoast branch in the UK became part of CoastNet, and that international dimension has continued to this day.

CoastNet now boasts a unique understanding of social issues in coastal areas and is increasingly seen as a focal point for the community voice in the UK.
