 Transforming coastal economies:

 challenges in coastal regeneration

A conference by CoastNet – the coastal experts. 5th December 2011, Westminster, London

“I know that coastal communities play a vital role in wellbeing of the whole country and I am glad that we can provide support for them through this new fund and ensure that they continue to benefit the whole of the UK.” George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer announcing the Coastal Communities Fund

"In a mono-culture, in particular seaside areas and coastal areas, they don't have the energy – they haven't come from a culture where they've got work, they think there's a more limited range of things they can aspire to…You have to open their minds that they can go to the city, they can go abroad. You can't turn around a school without turning around a community." Dame Elizabeth Sidwell, Commissioner for Schools for England

CoastNet research has shown that a disproportionate amount of deprivation in the UK is to be found in coastal settlements. For example, about a third of England’s population live in coastal areas whilst over 40% of the most deprived neighbourhoods are to be found there. Similarly, the economy of coastal areas, and this is not just seaside towns, underperforms when compared to inland areas by over 20%. (Click here  to view the report.)

What causes these disparities and what can be done to counter them? The solutions are not simply about job creation and inward investment. Clearly more is needed not only to directly stimulate growth but also to tackle the factors that cause decline and hamper growth. This event will bring together leaders from the public, business and charitable sectors to examine the issues and to explore solutions. Our aim is to promote a more integrated, and more successful, approach to coastal regeneration, needed because of the complex mix of factors that determine the socio-economic and environmental status of coastal places.

Big questions such as ‘Can growth be sustained in coastal settlements, given their peripheral location?’ ‘How can we capture the benefits of development at sea for coastal communities?’ ‘How can we best tackle urban decay and social exclusion in coastal areas, and make the most of their unique location in doing so?’ Whether you are from a seaside resort, a port or maritime city, or from a rural coastal area this conference is for you, and with the recent announcement by Government of the Coastal Communities Fund (available from April 2012) this event will help you to identify your priorities and to gain ideas for bids to the fund.
